HOW TO CREATE AND SUSTAIN REAL FRIENDSHIP
“ Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble_” (Ecclesiastes 4.9-10).
God made humans to instinctively seek and enjoy the company of others. For Adam, God created Eve to be his lifetime companion. Throughout human history there have been both positive and negative experiences in human friendships. Some were good (David and Jonathan 1Samuel 18.1-4) while some were evil (Amnon and Jonadab 2Samuel 13.1-15). The further mankind drifted away from God, the more difficult it became to create and sustain real friendship with others.
Scripture reveals divine principles that must be applied if we are to enjoy the blessings that come from friendship.
▪ Unconditional Love* “ There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. ” (John 15.13).
▪ Unshakable Loyalty . “ A friend is always loyal and a brother is born to help in time of need. ” (Proverbs 17.17).
▪ Frankness . “ An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy ” (Prov. 27:5-6).
▪ Continual Forgiveness . “ Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends ” (Proverbs 17:9).
C.S. Lewis said: ” When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now. In so far as I learn to love my earthly dearest at the expense of God and instead of God, I shall be moving towards the state in which I shall not love my earthly dearest at all. When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased. ”
To enjoy the abundant life God planned for you, it is important that you establish a personal relationship with Him. Jesus Christ is the Way to restore this broken relationships between God and man and between you and other humans. He says you need to believe in His death, burial and resurrection and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins (Mark 16.15-16). Then, you can become friends with Him and consequently create and sustain meaningful and purposeful friendship with other humans.
Any church of Christ near you can help you to find your way back to God and give you more counseling on how to improve your relationships .
